"Tips to Developing Church Employee Evaluations"

What are employee evaluations? In any type of business whether you're for profit or nonprofit an evaluation is a tool employers used to review the performance of an employee. Normally, the employee's supervisor is responsible for evaluating the employee. A private conference is normally scheduled to discuss the evaluation after it is completed.

Managing a church staff is no different than managing employees in businesses. Your church can actually benefit from the practices of other organizations. Regardless of job or industry, employees normally desire the similar things such as:

  • Knowing What is Expected of Them
  • Tools and Resources to Perform Their Job
  • Recognition and Reward for Meeting Expections and Goals

Here are some tips to developing church employee evaluations:
  • Defining Goals - Employees usually expect to have a job description that defines the tasks and responsibilities of the job, but they should also have specific goals that will relate with the organizational strategy. Example: If an employee has a goal to improve volunteer experiences then they should set goals that support that objective by maybe creating feedback from volunteers with a plan to improve based on the feedback.
  • Set Expectations - After the employee sets their goals there needs to be communications with the employee with a step-by-step process on how to complete the goal(s). The employee would then have opportunity to discuss any possible barriers and timelines for their goal and consequences if expectations are not met.
  • Compose Effective Questions - These effective questions in the employee evaluation should consist of questions that will give your employee a clear picture of what areas need improvement in their job and what areas they are doing extremly well in but at the same time you will need to encourage them to want to improve and not beat them into the ground. These questions should cover areas such as:
    • Mission Focus - Include question(s) on how well they understand team culture and making decisions based on the church's goals and strategies.
    • Interpersonal Relationships - Include question(s) on how they show respect for others regardless of posiiton and consider alternative ideas when making decisions.
    • Trustworthiness - Does the employee admit mistakes and fllow through on commitments?
    • Team Leadership - Does the employee ensure their team is well equipped and creates a fun working environment? How well do they address issues before the arise and become problems and do they inspire others to action?
    • Communication - Does the employee listen attentively and ask clarifying questions effectively?
    • Personal Development - Does the employee willingly receive feedback and demonstrate a teachable spirit?

Church employees work very hard so remember to have a structured reward and recognition program that can help them feel appreciated for their efforts. Include this as part of your annual merit increase process as well other recognition of good performance.

Church employees can come to work and want to do a good job but they are at the mercy of those who manage them to create an environment that encourages them and supports productivity. Always provide good communication and remove barriers that keep your employees from achieving their goals. This support helps employees to stay engaged with their organization and at the same time they will preform at higher levels and achieve greater results.
