VBS Followup Ideas - Free VBS Volunteer Registration Form & Questionnaire

In most churches, Vacation Bible School (VBS) is their largest summer activities. It usually takes up the form of a day camp including games, crafts, bible lessons, and many other activities.

This is the time of the year when churches all around the country are either wrapping up their VBS for the summer or getting their VBS in before the school year starts again. All the planning was done several months ago, volunteers were recruited, supplies were purchased, skits were rehearsed, games were planned, and VBS went off without a hitch. Everyone breathes easier with a sigh a relief and wishes one another a hearty, “I can’t wait until we can do this again next year.”

Often though, we tend to move forward to quickly and we forget a valuable asset such as collective knowledge, comments and suggestions of those who worked your VBS. While it is still fresh in their minds, use these VBS followup ideas and ask your staff and volunteers for their input on what went well, what didn’t work and what could be done differently next summer. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to improve your VBS by reflecting on the past. Immediately or shortly after VBS is over, give everyone a questionnaire (below) and ask them to give you some input.

It’s the time after VBS that’s the most crucial to your program’s success as an outreach tool. You need VBS followup ideas and a followup plan to ensure that the children and their families return to your church.

Here are some VBS followup ideas you might consider:

• VBS Adoption Kit: Make a kit with each child’s vital statistics: birthday, age, likes, interests, address, phone number, and family information. Then connect each child with a church family. Families can use the kits to get to know their “adoptees” throughout the year and encourage them to come to church and Sunday School.

• Shepherd List: Use registration cards to make a follow-up “shepherding” visits to children’s homes. Ask children about their interests and any questions they may have about your church. Explain to children that they’re Jesus’ little lambs and that you and he want to see them become a permanent part of your flock!

• VB S Part 2: A few weeks after your VBS, schedule a few more sessions so children who’ve committed their lives to Christ during VBS can learn how to keep growing spiritually. Have teachers explain what being a Christian means and how children’s lives will be changed. Also, prepare children to share their newfound faith with others and then conduct an outreach event for them to practice.

• VBS Reunion: Invite all the VBS children to a get-together every month or quarter. Make each reunion a wildly fun event that fits your VBS them. For example, if you had a “treasures” theme, have a treasure hunt one time and a treasures of the hear auction the next where teams bid on treasured character qualities.
