Church Job Descriptions

Labor Day originated during the labor union movements of the 1800s as a way to celebrate the social and economic advancements of the United States and pay tribute to the driving force of our economy-the American laborer. This includes the laborers of the church.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3: 23-24

Since Labor Day is around the corner now would be a good time to discuss job descriptions. See below.

Church Job Descriptions

Church Job Descriptions

Every church with employees, regardless of size, has job descriptions for a number of varied tasks that must be performed regularly or periodically. They may be written, or they may exist only in someone’s mind.

A staff member may not always be certain of the exact responsibilities assigned to a position. The church may never have arrived at clear-cut decisions regarding expectations for the position. The job may have grown with the person or position over a period of time with assignments added or assumed from time to time. This is when a problem may develop when a former staff member leaves and a new person comes into the assignment.

A written job description is an organized summary of the duties, tasks, responsibilities, and accountability involved in a staff position. The job description should be reviewed annually and, when a change in personnel occurs, re- tailored to fit the new situation.

I have several job descriptions available on my Job Descriptions page that you can download and customize to fit your church.

Labor Day Activities for Kids

“When I Grow Up”

Ask the kids to draw pictures of themselves doing what they want to do when they grow up. If the child’s writing skills are more developed, ask them to write a sentence about the picture or a paragraph explaining why they are interested in that career.

Let each child present his/her drawing to the class. Post all pictures on a wall of the classroom to form a career goals “quilt”. Invite Pastor, parents, and/or other classes to come look at the student’s work.

Apple Walk Game

With this Labor Day activity for kids, apples are not just for eating. It is a relay race that will have you working up an appetite!

•Apples •2 Large Empty Buckets This is a relay race for 2 teams. For each team, set an empty bucket 20 feet away from the players. The first player on each team puts n apple between his/her knees, runs or walks to the bucket and drops it in.

The first player then picks up the apple and runs back to hand it to the next player. That player (2nd) must do the same thing the first player did, and so on until everyone has had a turn. The first team to finish wins the game. Make sure you have plenty of apples to snack on – after all that hard labor, you’re going to be hungry!

Indian Taco Benefit or Fundraiser

Our church had an Indian Taco Benefit for my sister when her husband was in the hospital for 6 weeks diagnosed with Stage IV Colon cancer. This was a great fundraiser! We were able to raise lots of money in one day to help them in their time of need.

We passed out forms one week before fundraiser and then on that Friday we delivered and served Indian Tacos all day at our Masonic Lodge in town. We had Gospel Singing and had an excellent turn out. Wonderful fundraiser.

I have included the page below where you can download the Indian Taco flyer and the Benefit form. I hope your church can use utilize these forms.
