Effective Church Human Resources Management

Managing the Human Resources Department for your church or organization requires a knowledge and understanding of what it takes to manage, motivate, develop, recognize and reward employees. The responsibility of the Human Resources Management also requires planning of HR, staffing, performance management training and development, compensation and industrial relations.

Successful churches or organizations are those who have effectively managed change by turning strategy into action, managing processes efficiently, and being able to max employee and volunteer contribution and commitment.

Churches are characterized by both human (organizational) and Godly (spiritual) qualities. Because of its unique dual nature, the churches usually require both spiritual and organizational management.

There is sometimes a resistance when you label church management for Human Resources or other departments as a business function, but when people and money are involved there has to be structure and sound business decisions to ensure that the resources are managed and used appropriately.

The church should always strive to be much mor ethan just the ordinary not-for-profit organization, but we must take advantage of the best practices and procedures available to us. Simply weave them into your mission as servants and offer the best ministry you possibly can in the name of Jesus Christ.

Taking special care of your church staff team by using guidelines is more important than you think. Assemble a staff committee to facilitate these guidelines to be approved through management. Leaders should recognize the need for their employees to work in a safe, healthy environment with adequate benefits if possible and clear procedures of how to address work-related concerns by exhibiting qualities of love, care and respect that is pleasing to God. Churches rely a lot on volunteer support and they need a structured management process to help recruit, place, train and manage volunteer help. Volunteers are an asset and off-set costs of paying employees so provide your volunteers with a customer-friendly experience and this will help grow a strong volunteer program.

Become educated on state and federal laws regarding human resources. Don't bring unwanted scrutiny by operating in ways outside of legal parameters.

Most importantly, make sure you have the oversight you need necessary to create guidelines on paper and at the same time making sure they are followed in practice. Believe me, you do not want an attorney telling you that your policies were not followed.
