What is a policy for progressive discipline?
It is a disciplinary policy and procedure designed to provide structure
to a process of corrective action to improve and many times prevent a
repeat of undesirable employee behavior and performance issues.
If you have employees in your church or organization then you should have a
similar policy in place. If you do not have a policy such as this one in
place then you can use the sample below to use as a guide to create one for
your church, organization...
The disciplinary policy below includes:
- Heading - Includes the name of the policy
- Statement - The following progressive discipline actions
should be performed given the nature of the offense (serious offenses such as
sexual or physical assault and/or theft will have zero tolerance).
- Verbal Warning - 1. Employee will be given a verbal warning regarding their undesirable
behavior or action. 2. Employee
will be given an explanation of when and how the behavior or action took place.
This will include the reason as to why the behavior or action was unacceptable.

- Written Warning - 1. Employee will be given a written warning regarding their undesirable
behavior or action in the event that their behavior or action had either been
discussed in a previous verbal warning or their behavior or action was
considerably severe in nature. 2. Employee will be given an explanation of when and how their behavior or action took place. This will include the reason as to why the behavior or action as unacceptable. (See policy below to continue the written warnings.)
- Suspension - 1. Employee will be given a written documentation regarding the suspension
in relation to their undesirable behavior or action in the event that their
behavior or action had either been discussed in a previous verbal or written warning
or their behavior or action was considerably severe in nature. 2. The documentation will include information on the offense and the length of the term of suspension and why the employee has been suspended. (See policy below to continue the suspension warnings.)
- Termination - 1. Employee will be given a written documentation regarding their
termination and the undesirable behavior or action leading to and justifying
the termination. 2. The documentation will include information on the offense and previous disciplinary communications with the employee. (See policy below to continue the termination warnings.)
